A wasp is a predatory flying insect of the order Hymenoptera that is not a bee or ant. Wasps have stingers and membranous forewings and hindwings. A wasp is any member of the aculeate family Vespidae. Wasps are natural biocontrol. Parasitic wasps are used in agricultural pest control as they prey mostly on pest insects and have little impact on crops. The most familiar wasps belong to Aculeata, a division of Apocrita, whose ovipositors are adapted into a venomous stinger, though a great many species do not sting. Aculeata also contains ants and bees, and many wasps are commonly mistaken for bees, and vice-versa. Insects called "velvet ants" (Mutillidae family) are technically wasps. All wasps fall into one of two main categories: solitary wasps or social wasps. Adult solitary wasps generally live and operate alone, are fertile, and most do not construct nests. Social wasps live in colonies of up to several thousand and build nests but some in the colony may not be able to reproduce. In the more advanced species, just the wasp queen and male wasps can mate, with the majority of the colony being made up of sterile female workers.
