Model of a Vernier scale caliper. A caliper is a device used to measure the distance between two symmetrical opposing sides. They are used in many industrial settings such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, gunsmithing, handloading, woodworking, woodturning and medicine. The Vernier Scale is a variation of the more traditional caliper and it makes it possible to obtain a more precise measurement, to a hundredth of a millimeter or one thousandth of an inch. Vernier calipers can measure both internal and external dimensions and also depth by use of a probe attached to the movable head. The vernier scales may include both metric and inch measurements on the upper and lower parts of the scale. A more precise instrument that can be used for the same purpose is the micrometer.
