Interstate Road Sign Textures Tutorial

www.The3dStudio.com

Interstate Road Signs Come in many sizes and shapes depending on the purpose, what information is required on them and how they are used. They are made in four basic colors. Green backgrounds are used to instruct drivers on directional information. Blue signs give drivers information on points of interest nearby, White sign mark the Toll ways and yellow signs will warn of construction areas or detours ahead.

This tutorial will build textures for a sign built in the Interstate sign Tutorial also available on this website.
It will give you instruction on building the bump, specular and diffuse mapping for one of the signs on the model and leave you to use the same techniques to make different signs for the same model.

In the tutorial that follows you will be asked to create the following in PhotoShop.

Create a diffuse map with all text and borders as required
Create a bump map from the diffuse map and save it
Create a reflective specular map and save it.

Once completed, you should be able to modify the maps and create new ones and apply them to interstate road signs. This tutorial should take no more than an hour to complete depending on your experience and skill level.

Create a diffuse map with all text and borders

Open PhotoShop

Start a new file. The image size should be 20 x 10 inches and you should use 300 ppi resolutions. The background should be white. Use RGB color. See Fig 1-1

Fig 1-1

New File started with proper dimensions and settings

Fill the entire background with a medium green color. See Fig 1-2

Fig 1-2
www.The3dStudio.com

Background color was changed to green

Using the Line tool make white lines 50 px wide along the borders of the image. Leave a space of 50 px wide between the white lines and the border itself. See Fig 1-3

Fig 1-3

Border stripes added to the background

Use the elliptical selection tool and select an area of 1”in diameter tangent to the two borders and fill in with white. See Fig 1-4

Fig 1-4

White color applied to the encircled selected area

Select the inverse and paint over the excess white on the corners with green. See Fig 1-5

Fig 1-5
www.The3dStudio.com

White circle is still apparent after trimming around it with green

Create a new layer. Select the inverse again. Leaving the selected circle active fill the area in the circle with green. See Fig 1-6

Fig 1-6
www.The3dStudio.com

Selection is filled with green on a new layer

Edit transform and scale the selected area to leave the curved white border required. This should leave a quarter moon shape of white and you will need to select the unneeded areas of white and fill them with green. See Fig 1-7 and Fig 1-8.

Circle filled with green has been scaled down to match the border and the remaining white areas selected for painting green

Curved corner is finished

Flatten the layers so that everything is on one layer. Use the rectangle selection tool and select about 1.5 inches of the corner. Make sure the entire curved white border is selected. See Fig 1-9.

Fig 1-9

Corner selected for copying to opposite corners

Copy this selected portion of the image to the opposite corners. Position them and rotate them 90 degrees each time to allow the curved white border to match with the white borders and cover extraneous white areas. See Fig 1-10

Fig 1-10

Corners have been copied and rotated to align with the borders as required

Now add text to the image. The Arial Bold font should be used. Use all Capitol letters and space the lettering so that it is center justified. I used a 72 point font. Once the text is added to your satisfaction, save the file as ISDif001.jpg.

You may wish to also save a PSD so that you can modify the text and create new signage later.

Create a bump map from the diffuse map

The Lettering and Borders are made from reflective tape and reflective lettering decals. These have some thickness and even from a distance appear to have some depth to them. Save the image as ISBmp001.jpg

Use the fill buck tool on the background layer and fill all the green with a medium gray color. See Fig 1-12.

Fig 1-12

Background filled with medium gray for the first step in creating the bump map

Now flatten the layers again and fill the white areas with a gray slightly lighter than the background. See Fig 1-13.

Final image showing the bump map in its final form

Save your image to ISBmp001.jpg. Close this file.

Create a reflective specular map and save it.

Open the diffuse map you just created a moment ago and save it as ISSpe001.jpg. Fill in the green areas with a very light gray. See Fig 1-14.

Fig 1-14

Colors changed to the final colors for the specular map.

Save your file you are finished.

Now you can use 3DStudio Max to apply the material to the model sign and see what results you will get. Be sure to apply a UVW mapping to fit to the sign.

The results you get should look something like this.
