Micro Tutorial DS070504

Start 3ds Max
Open the file provided in this tutorial called Windless. See Fig 1-1

Fig 1-1

Open the original file.

In the top view draw a helix. This can be found under the shapes menu. See Fig 1-2 and 1-3.

The original scene before the helix is added

A helix is added to the scene

With the helix selected, click on the modify menu rollout. Under parameters change radius 1 and radius 2 to 31.00 height to 15 turns to 6 and leave bias alone. Then in the rendering menu above the parameters rollout, change the thickness to 1.52, sides to 18 and click on renderable, generate mapping coordinates and display render mesh. See Fig 1-4

Changing the parameters and rendering of the helix

Now with the helix selected, convert it to an editable mesh. Right click on the helix in the modifier stack and select convert to an editable mesh from the popup menu. See Fig 1-5

The helix now an editable mesh can be added to other segments and a realistic running rigging can be created. Using the helix and lines to create ropes and cables are easily done in 3dsMax.

Add a material to simulate the rope texture and color and you have completed this tutorial.
