DIMENSIONS LENGTH: 343m BEAM: 133m HEIGHT: 66m DECKS: 15 History The Intrepid Class was designed in the 2360's as a means to diversify a Federation fleet that had become predominantly larger, multi-purpose vessels.While powerful, these larger classes, such as the Galaxy and Excelsior class starships, took a great deal of resources to construct; therefore, fewer vessels were constructed, a situation that consequently limited the number of starships available for deployment.The Intrepid class was designed specifically to help rectify the situation. Primarily a science vessel, the Intrepid class was designed with some of the most advanced technology available to Starfleet, including bio-neural gel pack circuitry for more efficient computer processing, and an enhanced warp core that enabled to class to travel in excess of warp five without damage to subspace a considerable concern at the time.The Intrepid class was also designed to land on planetary surfaces in the event of an emergency. Though limited in its tactical capabilities, the Intrepid class was often deployed as a scout ship during the Dominion and Elorg Wars because of its speed and maneuverability, and worked to support larger, more powerful vessels during fleet engagements. The Intrepid class continues to serve in its role as a science vessel into the 25th century.
