Life of a Cyclist

Sometime last week, I was doing some errands between the house and Tomball and someone had attempted to throw a glass bottle at me. Thank God it didn't hit me. A few minutes later, someone in the passenger side of a car said a few choice words which I don't care to repeat here (to give you a clue, one of the words began with the letter "F" and it rhymes with "duck", that is as far as I am going as I don't feel that the word is appropriate for this site or community). I just wish that some people would just try to understand what those of us who depend on bicycles for transportation have to go through. When it is hot outside, we have to put up with the heat (which in Houston can get up to about 100 degrees or higher) and when it is cold, we are freezing our butts off. I am not going to get started on when it rains and we are unprepared (to give you an idea, we get wet and sometimes cannot see the road). The next time you just happen to see someone riding a bicycle, please keep these words in mind and try to show compassion for them. I know one day, I will have a car, truck, or van (preferably the latter) and I will too remember what I had to go through riding a bicycle. I would really appreciate it. Oh and feel free to comment as I do read them and most often I will approve the comment. Thank you for reading. I hope to write about new products soon.

Your post is a good reminder for everyone. My husband rode his bike a lot when he was younger and even today 40+ years later, he is very aware of cyclists and makes sure to give them plenty of space. He gets very angry when he sees cars veer over into the bike lanes even if there is no cyclist present because it's a sloppy driving habit that could have serious consequences. We both feel the bike lanes should be wider.

When Russ was a very young boy, he was riding his bike and someone opened their car door just as he came alongside the car. The car door knocked him off his bike and he still has a scar on his forehead from the accident. So it's not just when we are driving our cars that we need to be aware of bike riders.

I'm glad you were not seriously hurt. The rude passenger should have been thanking you for not polluting the air instead of polluting it himself with his nasty words!

Thank you for your comment, Lisa. Even where I have to travel on bicycle, there are some people that honk when they want to turn and they are in the bicycle lane and all I was doing is waiting for the light to turn green. Just today there was someone in a semi who was going in the opposite direction and that person honked his horn and it scared me and of course I had to wait for my heart to start beating again and I just questioned why he did that. The route I take to and from the nearest town (and the college and church) is not very well lit at night so it is harder for someone to see me, but I do have a taillight and two headlights and when it's warm I wear a light colored shirt, plus the reflectors that were on there when I got it.

I had to laugh with your last sentence though. The bottle didn't hit me at all and I am still thanking God for that or else I might had to go to the hospital. It just goes to show that there are some inconsiderate people in this world. Again, thank you for your comment.
