A Few New Game-Ready Products

In pursuit of crossing the 100-product threshold this weekend, I've added a few new low-poly, game-ready products to the collection... reserving a rather sizable model pack (Warehouse Elements Pack) for the 100th product added. Best of all, it's not all cliche crates and pallets. :)

Thanks for having a look, be sure to take a few moments to browse my products and, by all means, have a great weekend.

Making a Come-Back

It's been quite awhile since I last posted here or added any new products. I had a sudden, unexpected loss in the family in late 2010 and she took my 'give a damn' and passion for art along with her for a time... but I'm coming back. :)

After nearly 2 decades of scratching and clawing at life, the family and I finally have a home to call our own, paid-in-full, on a little patch of land down by the Mississippi River in Iowa... which means I've finally got the space and stability to let my graphic design get itself back on track and sprawl.

After a couple years of taking college courses toward a digital arts degree, I've decided to put the bachelor's on hold to just get back to what I truly love: making art at-will since freelance truly is where my heart is at.

My new moto: when life gives you lemons, model, unwrap, texture, rig, animate and render the hell out of 'em! ;)

Who Am I?

Where to begin? I guess at the beginning:

I was born in a small, rural village in the 'thumb' of Michigan, a place that I affectionately refer to as "home" regardless of where my travels take me.

As stated, I love to travel. So far, those travels have only taken us through the US but we, my family and I, hope to make it to our ancestral homelands of England, Scotland and Ireland someday. We've been fortunate enough to be able to travel the States while raising our four kids. It's been an enjoyable experience, seeing the majestic beauty of the Appalachians, the warm waters of South Florida, the glorious sunsets and clear night skies of New Mexico and Arizona, the snow-caps and awesome desert terrain of Colorado, the beautiful muddy waters of the great Mississippi River and, where we are currently, the amazing emerald landscapes of the Central Oregon and Northern California regions.

I've recently launched my career as a freelance artist (that goes without saying, actually) and I am a student of web development and computer animation, attending FullSail University Online as a member of the class of 2013. My overall goal is to remain a freelance 3d graphic design artist while expanding into web-based MMO development after my degree program.

My hobbies consist of 3d graphic design, perpetual self-study of physics and philosophy, 3d animation, website development and watching Doctor Who (if that can be a hobby).  I love all things sci-fi related and I take most of my inspiration from decades of Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate and Battlestar Galactica and from various authors including Isaac Asimov, Piers Anthony, Gene Roddenberry, Jules Verne and Douglas Adams... to name a few.

As well as the above mentioned authors, I enjoy Charles Dickens, Jack London, Mark Twain, J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Louis L'Amour and anyone contributing to the Star Trek and Dick Tracy works.

I fall somewhere between 'geek' and 'nerd' by nature, being more at peace with my surroundings when those surroundings include several computers, a solid internet connection and enough technology to drain the life out of a small power plant. I love most all music, though I'm finding that classic country and 'oldies', genres that I grew up with, are becoming somewhat harder to listen to with new artists reinventing genre's as they pop onto the scene. My fashion style is purely '80's... and there's no changing that! ;)

I'm the typical family guy, preferring to work from home to spend more time with the family than to work away from home. It's stressful, especially with deadlines, three teenaged daughters and virtually no place to find peace beyond the confines of the bathroom which, btw, is not nearly as available as I'd like it to be considering there's four women in the house who seem to share the same desire to spend hours each day on appearance.  I'd change nothing, though. I gladly accept the stress of working from home over the 'rat race'.

To effectively answer the question "who am I?", I must concede that most of what I've written is sufficiently unable to define who I truly am, though most of it defines my path in life. To allow a glimpse into my soul and into who I am, you must look through my eyes:

I see humanity as being predominately good, though immensely immature and lacking in concern for its own existence. I see us as being on the verge of coming into our own as a race, not individually by country but with global unity, as we take enormous leaps forward in our understanding of the universe around us and ourselves as we relate to it. I see great potential in everyone, though I recognize certain flaws in social order that prove to restrict much of that potential. I can see an end to the destruction of war someday through the coming together of nations seeking the common goal of expanding our reach into our galaxy, as started by the development of the ISS, ITER and other multinational ventures that are laying the foundation as I write this.

In general, I see us through those proverbial 'rose-colored glasses' and, at my age, I doubt my optimism or perspective will sway. My religious and political views exist around a simple, well known principle: live and let live. Anything or any idea that can justify the death of another is, by default, wrong as I see it.

To sum, this is who I am: A dreamer, a realist and an optimist... three aspects that typically do not exist well together without internal conflict. As being these, I am afforded the rights to ponder a grand future for humanity in general, to strive for betterment at the personal level, to reach for reachable goals and to believe in myself and others even when shortcomings would seek to disprove the validity of doing so.

Head in the clouds... and beyond!

I love sci fi... almost as much as I love 3d art. Putting both together just makes sense and is why my recent products are a bit 'out there'. Here's a look at what's available now and a view into what's to come:

This is all intended to be low-resource and game-ready. Thanks for looking and have a great day. =)

Back after a break... but not really...

Well, I'm back after a few months of stagnation. It appears that, in my absence, some interesting developments have occurred, most notably the FallingPixel/Exchange3D merger with TS. What's that saying always spoken by losers on the verge of defeat? Oh, ya: "If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em!" I've pulled out from both TS and E3D to boycott their greedy little alliance. How many of you feel the same way or have taken the same stance?

My break wasn't really a break. See, after 5 years of self-education with 3ds max, I decided to dive into the deep end of the learning pool by signing up for a bachelors degree at FullSail ONLINE. I was initially confident that my experience would give me an edge... until they threw Maya at me. So much for that edge. :P

As you can imagine, having been away from formal classes for the better part of two decades has proven to be a mild setback. As stated, my initial confidence has been shaken and that edge I thought I had balanced out rather nicely with my long-forgotten habits as a good student. I found out rather quickly that procrastination doesn't much fit in well with a college career path. So, to compensate for my lack of student intuition, I'm forced to actually focus on the tasks given and even try to resemble a motivated individual more often.

I'm also discovering that what I thought was a fast-paced self-education cannot compete with the laser-focused curriculum offered at the college level. The classes are only one month long each but there's at least four projects due each week and sometimes up to ten! It's a brutal reality check to discover that there are real deadlines 'out there', a lesson that I'm certain will prove its worth if/when I establish my place as an employee in the industry 'someday'.

So, I'm still here and happy to let you know that, if you are considering taking on some college-level courses in the field of CGI, you can do it... even at age 35 and beyond. If you're a dedicated artist and love the challenges that come with being so, you'll do just fine and probably thrive as I am.

Also, if anyone is interested, I've moderated a help-site, Max Realms, since its launch in '06, and there's plenty of 3ds max-related help being offered there. No question goes unanswered so if you've got a problem needing resolution and gooooogle fails you, stop by the forums and give us a shout. I am as I am always: BJS3D, and I'll be happy to share whatever I've learned.

Take care and, to those of you who live in or have family in Japan: my family and I wish you well and safety.
